“You don't know what you don't know, unless you question your perspective of the world and seek out to learn the truth, not from the people who work with people in need, but from the people in need.” Scott McKever, Project Manager for The Visibly Unseen The Visibly Unseen Photo Journal April 1st - 25th 2010 Launching Publicly April 8, 2010 Molson Community Gallery, McLaren Art Center There are many faces to poverty and not enough of those faces have been seen and acknowledged to evoke change on a larger scale. The premise for this exhibit revolves around the barriers in communication and awareness that need to be broken down in order for change and healing to occur. The Visibly Unseen Photo Journal is a collaborative exhibition featuring photographic images created by a select group of up-and-coming documentary and photojournalistic photographers, currently students at Georgian College Barrie Campus, and the real experts on poverty: those who themselves are living below the poverty line or at risk and vulnerable. Who are these people? What are we not seeing or hearing? What ARE we seeing and hearing? What don’t we know? What SHOULD we know? Intended to be an exposé and a real look from the inside out, this exhibition will also showcase auditory and visual words by those who need to have a voice so that their stories may be heard. Through this body of work, the participants of the exhibition wish to change perceptions and lift the veil of anonymity that hinders understanding, in order to create the opportunity for empowerment and a positive foundation from which to move forward and away from invisibility.
